Storyline

Kevin Lomax, a defense attorney in Gainesville, Florida, has never lost a case. He defends a schoolteacher, Mr.
Gettys, against a charge of child molestation. During the trial, Kevin 

realizes that his client is guilty,
and a reporter tells him that a guilty verdict is all but inevitable. However, through a harsh cross-examination Kevin
destroys the credibility of the 

victim, Barbara, and secures another not guilty verdict.

As he
celebrates, Kevin is approached by a representative of the New York law firm Milton, Chadwick & Waters, who offers him a
large sum of money to help the firm with a jury selection. 

After Kevin's jury delivers a not guilty verdict,
John Milton (Al Pacino) offers him a large salary and a swanky apartment if he joins the firm. Despite warnings from his
Evangelical 

Christian mother, Alice, about sinful big city life, Kevin accepts the job and moves with his
wife Mary Ann to Manhattan.

Kevin Lomax, un avvocato
della Florida che non ha mai perso una causa, durante una pausa del processo ad un professore accusato di pedofilia, si
reca ai servizi, dove prevede come sarebbe 

il suo futuro se difendesse il professore che lui sa essere
colpevole. Durante questa lunga riflessione vive il suo trasferimento a New York, a seguito dell'assunzione da parte del

studio legale Milton.

Giunto in città conosce il titolare dello studio, John Milton,
un personaggio inquietante ma pieno di fascino, che dapprima gli assegna una causa di diritto sanitario e, dopo la sua


vittoria, un triplice omicidio che lo porterà verso una deriva personale che lo allontanerà dalla
moglie Mary Ann, che lo condurrà a pensare sempre più al proprio successo e ad invaghirsi 

di un'altra
donna, mentre la moglie comincerà a soffrire di turbe psichiche (paranoia ed allucinazioni schizoidi) dopo avere
assistito ad un susseguirsi di strani e di inquietanti 

avvenimenti.............
