Description

New York’s Black Anvil were created in 2007 by former members of recently defunct hardcore activists Kill
Your Idols: vocalist/bassist P (Paul Delaney), guitarist G (Gary Bennett), and drummer/vocalist R (Raeph Glicken). The
trio recorded its debut album, Time Insults the Mind, for release through Monumentum Records in 2008, but soon drew the
attention of Relapse Records, which reissued the LP a year later and put the band on the road opening for Marduk in the
summer of 2009.

The increasingly popular New York-based trio Black Anvil return with their devastatingly heavy second full-length album Triumvirate. Black Anvil play a menacing, deadly form of death metal with blackened overtones, bringing to mind such bands as Celtic Frost (an obvious influence), and other dark death metal bands such as Incantation. Like those bands, Black Anvil are able to project dark tones into their form of death metal, resulting in a much greater sense of evil and foreboding than is normally heard in most straight up death metal.

First and foremost, the music on Triumvirate has a huge, exceptionally heavy sound with crushing guitars and a loud bass, obviously forming the bulk of the band’s sound. The riffs are thick, and the music alternates between a mid-paced tempo and a fast gallop that never really approaches the modern blast beat.

The result is a bit of an old school sound, but to characterize Black Anvil as a part of the OSDM revival would be inaccurate. Rather, Black Anvil are carving out their own niche while remaining true to their influences.

Although treading in well-worn territory hearkening back to the early days of Celtic Frost, Black Anvil have a rare ability to create music that has a fresh quality. The reason for this is a keen ear towards variation and songwriting. Besides the emphasis on simply crushing the listener, there are a few moody, almost atmospheric moments on Triumvirate, all simply done with some mild guitar melody and a slow pace. The result is an enhancement of the crushing weight of the album, a feeling of foreboding, and a feeling of freshness to the songwriting.

Simply put, Black Anvil have delivered a crushing album in Triumvirate that probably will grace many top ten lists for 2010, including my own. Undoubtedly, the band’s opening slot on this fall’s highly anticipated Watain tour will greatly enhance Black Anvil’s visibility, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Black Anvil steal the show. Highly recommended.
