Complete Marvel Chronology 1976 00-12



1976 - Jack's Back!



1976 was the two hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in the US and the theme was reflected in
several of Marvel's titles.



Captain America, with the aid of Mister Buda, visits several periods of time to participate in the Nation's significant
events, including becoming the inspiration for the US flag.



On the cover of the Marvel Calendar Cap is joined by the Hulk and Spider-Man marching into battle in a setting from
1776.



Doctor Strange journeys back in time to meet Benjamin Franklin, and Howard the Duck is a candidate for the President of
the US.



But two words would cause more excitement for fans of Marvel Comics than any birthday celebrations ever could -- JACK'S
BACK!



The Return of the King



Jack Kirby returned to Marvel in 1976, over five years after he had walked out on Marvel and returned to DC.



In his first two periods with Marvel, Kirby, like all other writers and artists, worked for hire and was paid by the
page. None of the creators received ownership for the creation of the many characters they had invented, the company
would always own all rights to the character.



Jack Kirby first worked at Marvel with his partner Joe Simon in the forties but when the Superhero popularity waned
after WWII he went elsewhere, including DC where he had much success. In the late fifties he returned to Marvel working
with Stan Lee and this preparation would see the partnership develop an understanding which would make the new Marvel
Age of Comics so successful.



But frustrated with the lack of recognition for his work, amongst other matters, he left at the end of the sixties and
returned to DC where he was writer, artist and editor and created the Fourth World, featuring the New Gods, Forever
People and Mr Miracle.



In 1976 he was rewarded with a deal at Marvel which would see him take the same full control of his work and made the
return to the House of Ideas with a new storyline on his first creation - Captain America.



He would also create a new Black Panther title, but in July he crafted his best new title in the Eternals.



Other work in this period was the graphic novel Silver Surfer, the adaptation of the movie 2001, Machine Man and Devil
Dinosaur.



When Gods Walk the Earth



The premise of the Eternals - a race called the Celestials visit Earth in the distant past and are seen as Gods by the
humans - actually predates the publication of the book Chariots of the Gods in which Erich von Daniken suggests that
evidence exists of alien races visiting Earth in the past.



Jack Kirby would create his most important series in his final stay at Marvel with the Eternals, and in keeping with his
new editorial power didn't set the series within the Marvel Universe. It was only later that the characters were
integrated in Marvel's comics, initially in the pages of Thor.



Howard the Duck



Having appeared in stories with Man-Thing, Howard the Duck receives his own title in January '76.



Created by Steve Gerber, with art by Frank Brunner, Howard is a flashback to the funny animal comics popular in the
forties and fifties, coupled with a satirical viewpoint of the real world's issues.



Many genres would be lampooned over the series' run, but at the same time the stories would remain grounded in the
Marvel Universe and often explored the alienation the other, more human, characters would suffer. Howard would find
himself having the same difficulties integrating as the Thing or Spider-Man.



Omega the Unknown



Omega is an alien robot who comes to Earth to protect 12 year old James-Michael Starling.



On a journey to New York to begin a new life,  James-Michael is involved in a car crash which reveals his parents to be
robots. He lapses into a coma, and when he awakens is sent to Hells Kitchen where he is fostered to a local couple. 



Whilst in the hospital he is attacked by a robot from Omega's planet but is protected by Omega, who will eventually meet
James-Michael in person and stay as his protector.



The story remains unresolved within it's ten issue run, and although the story is picked up and concluded in the
Defenders, the suggestion is that Gerber would not have completed the story in the same way.



Although Omega only lasted for ten issues it became a big fan favourite and was recently re-imagined.



Enter The Phoenix



Jean Grey seemingly made the ultimate sacrifice in the X-Men's battle with the Sentinels in X-Men 100.



When the shuttle that Jean was piloting crashed into the Hudson River, the X-Men feared her dead. To their surprise a
being arose out of the water and proclaimed herself to be Jean Grey but now known as the Phoenix.



Chris Claremont had plans to make Jean Grey more powerful but as the stories developed it became unclear whether the
Phoenix was Jean or a copy.



Many aspects of the mystery would be addressed in the Dark Phoenix Saga, which would begin in issue 129 and the X-Men
would leap from relative anonymity to see massive sales success.



When Peter Met Clark



The comics world saw an event that was unparalleled in 1976 when Marvel and DC followed up the friendly collaboration of
the previous year, the Wizard of Oz, with the biggest team-up possible - the Amazing Spider-Man meeting Superman, the
Man of Steel.



Superman, the first comic book superhero was still as popular at DC with legions of fans, Spider-Man was the face of
Marvel, who had risen from DC's shadow to eclipse the older company's sales in little over fifteen years.



Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, responsible for one of the best Amazing Spider-Man runs a year or earlier, were assigned to
tell the story. Conway was one of the few writers at the time who had written both Superman and Spider-Man, so he was
perfect for the job. Joining them was Dick Giordano, a DC Comics executive and one of the best inkers in the business at
the time. In addition, legendary DC artist, and one-time X-Men artist, Neal Adams assisted Andru with some of the
pencils.



Billed as "The Battle of the Century!" the book was an enormous seller, but in addition to that the story by
Conway, Andru and Giordano didn't settle for mediocrity. Instead, they produced a thoroughly entertaining story that
holds up just fine as a comic book, regardless of its historic importance.



The Man Called Nova



Nova makes his debut in September as Marvel looks to create a new character in the style of Spider-Man.



Written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by John Buscema, Richard Rider becomes Nova when he receives his powers from the
mortally wounded alien, Rhomann Dey, who is a member the Nova Corps, an intergalactic police force.



Other Debuts



Weirdworld is first introduced in Marvel Super Action 001.



Patsy Walker joins the Super Heroes in Avengers 144 as Hellcat.



Bill Foster uses Hank Pym's growth serum and becomes Black Goliath in February.



Lorna Dane becomes Polaris in X-Men 097.



Bullseye first aims for Daredevil in Daredevil issue 131. 1979 will see greater exploration of the character in Frank
Miller's acclaimed run on the title.



Union Jack and his nemesis Baron Blood first appear in Invaders 007.



Captain Britain becomes the first new comic published by Marvel outside the US, the UK produced comic beginning a weekly
schedule which would last for 39 issues.



Brian (Captain Britain) Braddock's sister Betsy is introduced in issue 008 of Captain Britain.



Notable Events



The Shi'ar first appear in X-Men 097.



Doctor Strange meets Dracula in a crossover story. The story begins in Doctor Strange 014 and concludes in Tomb of
Dracula 044, both drawn by Gene Colan.



Fighting the battle against the Nazis on the home-front, the Liberty Legion made their debut in Marvel Premiere 029. The
team includes Miss America, Red Raven and the Whizzer.



Wonder Man is resurrected in Avengers 151.



Jarella, whom the Hulk met in the microverse, dies saving a young boy. (Incredible Hulk 205)



December sees the introduction of a third regular monthly Spider-Man title, joining the Amazing Spider-Man and Marvel
Team-Up.

About the Complete Marvel Chronology



The Complete Marvel Chronology (CMC) is version 2.0 of the Marvel Chronology (MC).



The MC was created by cyager69 aka Chuck, who uploaded Marvel comics beginning
with Fantastic Four 001 (Nov 61) through to the issues published in Jun 1997.



When Chuck was unable to continue the uploads I took over the MC and uploaded
the remainder of the issues through to December 2008. Additional uploads added various titles not cover-dated with a
specific month (the 'Decades' uploads) and seven Fill packs added new scans for issues missing when the original uploads
were done for the 70's through to the 90's.



With none of Chuck's original uploads online, the decision was to either upload the original version of 1961-1996 or go
with a brand new, full version incorporating the missing genres, such as romance, western and humour, and including the
imprints which Chuck intended to upload following the completion of the MC.



The CMC will cover Marvel's entire seventy year history. At present I am
uploading the years beginning with 1960 and these uploads will continue right through to December 1996. After that I
have not finalised what will follow, but the likelihood will be that I go back to upload the 39-59 period, and then
upload the 97-09 period again. When I do upload version 2.0 of 97-09 there will be many additions and many new scans.



News and Notes



Superman vs the Amazing Spider-Man sadly hasn't been scanned yet, a scan exists
from the nineties reprint so a version of the story is available. I will include that reprint in the Fill Pack coming up
after the seventies uploads are complete.



Marvel Sticker Set I have included two versions of the collection for 1976, the
version previously included in the MC only had one of the Checklist cards, the
new version has all five.



Coming Next



Next weekend will see two uploads from 2009, covering the months of May and June.



After that I will conclude the uploads for 2009 with the three remaining years from the seventies along with the Fill
Pack.
