After six full-length albums, Norwegian blackmetallers Crest of Darkness will be back with an EP, Evil Messiah, due to
be released on February 23 2015 on My Kingdom Music both as digipack and as vinyl. The EP also contains a cover of Alice
Cooper’s classic “Sick Things”, a perfect choice for its malignant and sinister atmosphere.
 

  
  Evil Messiah will also see the debut in the line-up of the new drummer Bernhard, from the alternative /
gothic rock band Pale Forest, together with the leader, bassist and singer of the band Ingar Amlien (Roquefire,
Conception, Amlien's Inferno) and guitarist Rebo.
  
  
  The EP was mixed and partly recorded at MLP
Studios and partly at the Rebo’s studio in Gjøvik and was mastered in the outskirts of Salerno, Italy, at the
Sonic Temple Studio by Fabio Calluori. The album artwork was made by Morten Hansen.
  
  
  This
Norwegian band has been around since the early 1990s and were therefore part of the earlier days of the black metal
movement in Norway. And that you can hear on their newest EP ‘Evil Messiah’ which has a distinct Nordic
sound, without any influences from anything fancy. Just the pure, dirty sound of the best days of Norwegian black metal
in the vein of old Gorgoroth or so. It’s interesting really because although the name of this band has crossed my
path many times, I have never looked into them. And that’s very surprising as their discography includes two EPs
(incl. this one) and six full-lengths.
  
  
  So, four tracks can be found on this black metal killer
one of which is a black metal version of Alice Cooper’s ‘Sick Things’ for which the band have
produced a lyrics video, too (see below). Track one is the title track and is an old school black metal song with a
slight tilt towards the thrashier vein of black metal. In fact, also the short and not too technical solo that can be
found in this song point towards the band’s interest in old school black thrash. But make no mistake, this is
undoubtedly a black metal song that has reminiscences of Gorgoroth, as said above. The main difference are the synths in
the background though which add a nice layer of atmosphere and coldness. Plus, there is a certain groovier tone to this
song as well. Of course, one can say that we’ve had all this before. True, but if you like this kind of music,
every new song that goes into that direction is first of all interesting and then, as in this case, hopefully good.
  
  
  
  Moving on to ‘Armageddon’, the second track of the EP and that type of black
metal which I dig more than anything! It’s slightly melodic, slightly thrashy, has blast beats and fills your
speakers with all the black metal heart craves for. But it does not get boring while doing so. Because the speed is
taken out and the song turns towards once again a little bit more groovy, almost headbanging-kind of metal. Very cool
and very captivating! Especially since also here the synths in the background, very discreetly, add an additional layer
of atmosphere.
  
  
  But then comes ‘Abandoned By God’, a highly atmospheric and
bone-chilling mid-tempo song (though at times underlined by a relentless double-bass) which is the most melodic one of
all. Here, I. Amlien’s high-pitched and rough vocals come most prominently to the fore. This song is by far my
favourite on this EP and should make every black metal disciple who is into the 1349 track ‘1349’ happy.
Unfortunately, in the second half of the song the tension which the introductory riffs build up somehow disappears. But
the band finds a great way to compensate this by adding a somewhat progressive-sounding, but still very atmospheric
part, while the rhythm guitars play rather interesting rhythmic patterns. Interesting, to say the least. Very untypical
for a black metal song as this, but very cool!
  
  
  The conclusion of this EP constitutes Crest of
Darkness‘ cover version of ‘Sick Things’. This is very difficult to evaluate in any way, because I
guess either you like cover versions or you don’t. And if you do, do you like sticking to the original or
amending it, streamlining it with the sound of the covering band? And then of course, do you like the band/song which is
being covered. For me it’s all and neither, especially since I have never been too much into Alice Cooper in the
first place. Therefore, this song doesn’t leave me too impressed and falls outside the scope of the overall
rating of the EP.
  
  
  So, leaving Alice Cooper aside (though I do have to give the band credit for
covering Alice Cooper which I have never seen on a black metal record before), I really dig ‘Evil Messiah’.
It has everything an old school black metal record needs and stylistically coming somewhat close to Gorgoroth I can
recommend this EP to all of you black metal folks out there who are into true Norwegian black metal. Because this is
what it is. Nothing more, nothing less.
