Holiday Island is a fun little business sim developed by a small German games design company called Sunflower. The game
plays a little but like Sim City except everything is centered around the business of setting up a holiday resort in a
tropical island. For a more realistic experience, you might be better advised playing SimIsle which is a game along the
same grounds, which I haven't personally tried out but I hear is much more realistic; even going to the lengths of
considering the ecological consequences of industrialising an island paradise. But I digress... although allegedly less
realistic, Holiday Island is an enjoyable game which provides a very satisfying playing experience. This is partially
manifested by the simplicity of the game, you can learn most of what you need to know of the game by jumping straight in
and playing the game. It will of course take a few attempts to learn what strategy is most likely to succeed and to get
a feel for how to attract an optimal number of tourists to your resort but it should be a fun experience the first few
times even if you don't succeed.



Much of the game play involves juggling funds to build hotels, accomodation, leisure activities and restaurants. The
number and location of these is important, as is the interconnectivity between your different facilities. Some amount of
time should be spent adjusting the prices you charge for each facility - you will find tourists willing to play much
more for the same service in different locations depending on the ease of access, the number of other nearby facilities
of similar types and even whether or not there is noisy construction going on nearby. While there is no point in having
more tennis courts than there is accomodation on the island, it is also important to note that if activities are too
scarce, tourists might decide to go instead to your competitors resorts for their summer fun. Similarly you will have to
carefully monitor the pricing and availibility of transport and other essential facilities like power, sewage and
garbage disposal. Although at first many businesses may run at a loss as your entertainment areas are being set up, it
is important to plan for the future and make your island accessible to potential tourists, even if it means taking an
extra loan out and lowering prices until things really start to move.



When this finally happens you can increase the touristy potential of your resort by buying famous international
landmarks on auction when they become available at certain stages in the game. Also as you and your competitors start to
really start doing business you get the option of sabotaging different aspects of your competitors business through
various means e.g. setting a rodent infestation in one of their properties.



The graphics are fairly neat and very nice on the eyes and the game music is pretty good. The interface is fairly
intuitive although you should be careful of clicking on the screen with your cursor in build mode and accidentally
putting up an expensive piece of infrastructure in the wrong place. Gameplay over all is quite enjoyable and easy to
learn.



A couple of the complaints I have with the game: one is that the version I got was a bit buggy in XP. The game starts to
look for nonexistant image files without which it can't perform the next step e.g. a sabotage. In most cases the game
files actually exist but the program looks for a file with extra trailing spaces in the name. There are some fixes for
this however so it's not too bad. I also had trouble in the save interface (in WInXP) as the game doesn't allow me to
save a name with a custom filename but again this isn't too crucial as you can simply reload your "last saved"
game when you have to. A couple of disappointing things in the gameplay is that it is not always obvious what has caused
the profitability of your individual properties to plummet in some cases ... unfortunately I played this without having
a manual so never fully figured it out.



Secondly wandering tourists have a habit of camping out for very long periods of time on the popular areas of open space
so once or twice I found that I had cleared an area of prime property only to have a tourist plant his picnic mat on the
sand preventing me from building in that spot. And usually they don't leave for a long time, if ever. Of course both
these things can reasonably be worked around.... for the camping tourist problem, simply plant a cheap palm tree on any
square that you want to keep busker free.



That said the game is quite fun although it gets a bit easy after you start raking in the money and you might get bored
of the repitiveness after a few dozen sessions. However it's a game worth having a look at and a nice little temporarily
addictive activity to fire up once in a while.
