In early 20th century Tokyo, new Western ideas and ways are mixed in with traditional Japanese culture. This is a hilarious story about a young girl who carries a romantic idea about her future while seeking to be liberated from the old customs.
Born as the only child of a major, Benio becomes a complete tomboy, acquiring skills in martial arts. At age 17, she is ordered to marry the son of a well-established family. That's the beginning of her story. Her clumsy behavior and straight-forward attitude always lead her into trouble, but everyone seems to forgive this honest, optimistic and charming girl. E' il settimo anno dell'epoca Taisho (1909-1924) a Tokyo. Anne (nel fumetto Benio) è una ragazza in contrasto con le usanze tradizionali giapponesi e cerca in tutti i modi di liberarsi dal giogo di "donna serva" che si ha nella mentalità giapponese che si sente al collo. Purtroppo per lei, suo padre decide di darla in sposa ad una famiglia nobile, così Anne si ritrova fidanzata con il bel tenente Shinobu Ijuin e, sempre costretta dal padre, va a vivere con il ricco ragazzo e i suoi nonni nella loro casa. Anne inizialemnte farà di tutto per farsi cacciare dalla casa, ma continuando a dividere il tetto con Shinobu, alla fine si innamora di lui. Il caso vuole che il bel tenente sia chiamato in guerra in Mancuiria e Anne, troverà un lavoro per aiutare la famiglia Ijuin, alla quale si è affezionata.
