"Jazz drummer
Klaus Weiss, also known for his own projects and the band Sunbirds, was the key figure in another Munich supergroup
project that involved a different crowd to the usual jazz musicians he worked with. He had become fascinated with the
possibility of creating a drum orchestra out of the wealth of Munich rock and jazz drummers, and thus Niagara was born
featuring percussionists from all backgrounds.
With just one track per side the debut NIAGARA offered an energetic
and highly charged percussion music combining rock, jazz and African cultures into a most complex music. Obviously, such
an album was destined to very limited appeal and thus the next Niagara offering S.U.B. featured other instruments (with
more musicians from Doldinger projects) turning Niagara into a percussive fronted fusion band, in the realms of Embryo
and Passport, but with a much bigger jazz-groove sound. The even more obscure third AFIRE returned to the
multi-percussion format, with Dave King adding bass on just a few tracks. With its continual innovation, and some of the
most bizarrely offbeat rhythmic structures I've ever heard, it is easy to see why this record is widely sought after by
