Original D&D (1974-1977)
Back in the very beginning, D&D was an offshoot of the 'Chainmail' miniatures game. The very first products assumed the players were very familiar with the concepts and rules for tabletop wargaming, and as a result the rulebooks could seem confusing and incomplete. However, the release of the Greyhawk supplement in 1975 really saw Dungeons & Dragons expand into a truly independent role playing game.
By 1977 a desire to create a more understandable rule system (and a disagreement over the direction D&D should take) led to the development of two new streams of D&D... Basic D&D and Advanced D&D. Because it was still selling well, TSR continued to produce and sell publications from the "original" era until after 1980, but no new material for the initial game system was produced after 1977.
