When I first got
this album in 1979 I had never heard of Sally Oldfield (older sister of the more famous Mike), although she had recorded
vocal tracks on several of his albums. This debut record seemed then (and now) as way better than anything her brother
was recording, although interestingly, also like her brother's efforts, it includes a vast array of stringed and
percussively rhythmic and repetitive layers mostly played by Sally. The song structure and instrumentation was more
mature, concise and accessible than what Mike was doing. And then there is her voice - a crystal clear, pitch perfect 4
octave mezzo-soprano - heavenly. 

So much for a review focused on 'Sally compared to Mike', what it really
needs to be is Sally Oldfield as her own person/artist, and in that she is perfect as she is. 

This music has
the innocent charm of the dawning of a new-age - a mix of Middle Earth and old Norse images. The songs are bright,
upbeat, sweet and romantic and full of pure aspirations. And this is the perfect music to create this sense of new
beginnings and connection to one's roots. The cover photo says it all, this is a work of rare natural beauty. 

(This 2004 reissue is sonically beautiful (clear and clean separation of the instrumental and vocal tracks), as well
providing liner notes including the all the lyrics and a short revealing essay by Malcolm Dome on Sally's
