Summary:
  Years after the war between the Children of Water and the Children of Fire, Oceanus, a god of the sea,
presents Prince Sirius with the eye of Algarock, thereby putting him in charge of those that dwell under the waves. But
when Sirius encounters a beautiful Fire Child named Malta (the daughter of the Queen of Fire), he is lost in love and
defies the law that states that Children of Water and Children of Fire must forever remain separate to prevent war from
breaking out once more. Sirius and Malta struggle to be together while running into obstacles and suffering great losses
along the way. But in the end, are the echoes of history too loud to overcome, or can the two lovers be united and bring
peace to the land?

  The Legend of Sanrio Eiga:
  Once upon a time,
before Sanrio was known abroad only as the company that produces Hello Kitty merchandise, there existed a studio that
produced lavishly animated films year after year. But the powers that be soon came to the rather obvious conclusion that
full, rich animation is expensive, and a lot more money could be made simply by manufacturing stationery products with
poorly drawn doodles on them. And so, even though the films that Sanrio Eiga produced between 1977 and 1985 were
originally intended as epic family-friendly classics that would appeal to audiences worldwide and generate revenue for
decades, they were instead essentially abandoned and quickly forgotten.
  
  The Legend of Sirius was perhaps
the best film produced by Sanrio. Based on a story by Sanrio founder Shintaro Tsuji, it's yet another story of forbidden
love, in the tradition of Romeo and Juliet (or Pyramus and Thisbe), which takes place in a lush elemental fantasy world.
It features the appealing design of art director Yukio Abe (who most recently was art director for Stormy Night),
incredible stylized effects animation directed by Mikiharu Akabori (one of the most influential effects animators of the
70's), and a beautiful orchestral score by Koichi Sugiyama, easily as good as any of Joe Hisaishi's scores for epic
Miyazaki films. Although there are a few cheesy moments, this is a great film; otherwise I wouldn't have taken the time
to make this custom DVD.
  
  The video and Japanese audio elements were taken from the R2 Japanese DVD and
are untouched. The English audio is from the long out-of-print English-dubbed VHS, which was renamed The Sea Prince and
the Fire Child. Fortunately, the English dub is a pretty faithful translation of the original Japanese. There are no
cuts to the English version, and although some lines clearly aren't a direct literal translation of the Japanese, and
some of the names were changed, the story is the same in both versions. I used the English dub as a basis for the
English dubtitles, with a few changes to make it a little more faithful to the original Japanese. It's frustrating--I
don't know nearly enough Japanese to do an actual translation from scratch, but I recognize enough to know when the
English lines aren't a direct translation of the Japanese lines. So there was a little bit of creative freedom in making
the subtitles, but only when necessary. Also, I changed some of the English names back to the original Japanese names,
but only the ones that I thought were distractingly stupid (for example, Bibble was changed back to Chiku, but Hyperia
was not changed back to Temis).
  
  I know that one of the main points of subtitles is having a more faithful
translation of the original dialogue than in the dub, and that point is essentially lost when dubtitles are used. But if
you don't understand Japanese, you won't notice whether or not the subs are accurate, and if you DO understand Japanese,
then help me make the subs better for god's sake. I've included the subs as an srt file in case any Japanese speakers
want to edit them. Please do so. Either way, you'll want to watch this with the Japanese audio because the voice acting
is better, and because you'll have better sound quality for the amazing music. The English audio was included because I
happened to have it and it was easy to add, and this way young English-speaking children will be able to enjoy this
film, if you happen to have any.
