Nata dalla visione originale di Terry Nation (Doctor Who – Blake's 7), la serie gioca con

i terrori della guerra fredda e la continua minaccia dell'olocausto nucleare viene tradotta

in un terrore molto più antico: una devastante pestilenza che riduce la popolazione dell'intera

Inghilterra a poche migliaia di sopravvissuti.

La prima delle tre stagioni della serie mostra la rapida catastrofe che, con la fuga di un

letale virus da un laboratorio asiatico, scatena sul mondo un'epidemia che annulla in pochi

giorni il 99,9% dell'umanità.

I tre protagonisti principali, la tenace e benestante Abby (Carolyn Seymour), il taciturno

ingegnere Greg (Ian McCulloch) e la vivace, giovane londinese Jenny (Lucy Fleming) attraversano

un paese stranito e desolato alla ricerca di Peter, il figlio di Abby, che notizie confuse

vorrebbero ancora vivo.

Attorno ai tre si forma lentamente e con molti problemi una comunità unita dal comune bisogno

di sicurezza e dalle necessità della sopravvivenza, ma sempre più aperta verso un possibile

futuro.
