Yi Shioon è uno studente del primo anno della Nine Arts Dragon High School; non ha un carattere
forte e non è nemmeno coraggioso, per questo motivo viene costantemente preso di mira dai bulli della sua scuola e
dal loro capo, Chang-Ho, che lo picchiano per estorcergli denaro. Contuso e umiliato anche di fronte alla ragazza di cui
è innamorato, le sue giornate peggiorano di volta in volta.
Non potendo pagare l’ultima esosa richiesta
di denaro, totalmente contro voglia, avendo notato un volantino che pubblicizzava una palestra dove si insegna
autodifesa, decide di provare a dare un’occhiata per vedere se può riuscire ad opporsi, se può diventare
più forte. Casualmente, nel quartiere malfamato indicato nella pubblicità, nota il nuovo professore sostituto
Chun-woo, appena arrivato alla sua scuola, disintegrare con tecniche impressionanti, quasi non umane, una gruppo di
energumeni che lo avevano accerchiato per la riscossione di un debito.
Nei giorni successivi a scuola le cose
peggiorano sempre più e Shioon arriva a pensare che forse l’unica soluzione sia cambiare scuola o peggio
ancora il suicidio. La situazione precipita quando la sua amica Saehee, per difenderlo, rivela tutto a un professore e
per questo anche lei viene presa di mira. Shioon che per difenderla aveva fatto finta di non conoscerla per tutto questo
tempo, ora si trova con le spalle al muro. Per prima cosa cerca di convincere il professore maestro di arti marziali a
“sistemare” i ragazzi al posto suo ma quello rifiuta affermando che se non dimostra un briciolo di coraggio
non troverà mai nessuno disposto ad aiutarlo. Queste parole, unite al pensiero della ragazza nelle loro mani,
risvegliano l’ego del ragazzo che decide di mettersi in gioco e di voler cambiare a tutti costi quel suo
carattere che tanto odia.
Così inizia la nuova vita per Shioon, il suo percorso per diventare più forte,
senza sapere però che da lì in avanti la sua “strada” incrocerà ben presto cose più grandi di
lui: una società parallela, quasi una razza a sé, chiamata Murim, guerrieri capaci di gestire e convertire in
forza il proprio Ki tanto da superare i limiti umani, una forza tanto grande da portarli vicino a tentazioni di usare le
loro capacità per dominare gli altri. Per evitare ciò, esiste L’"Alleanza delle Arti Marziali" che detta
regole e le fa rispettare.
Ben presto il ragazzo scoprirà che Chun-woo in realtà è il Goomoonryong, un
guerriero formidabile, l’ultimo capace di padroneggiare tutte le nove le tecniche marziali del Drago e della
Terra, che vive solo per la vendetta nei confronti dell’Alleanza e distruggere quell’ordine che ha ucciso
il suo maestro. Così, attendendo il momento propizio, deve nascondersi sia da chi lo bracca per riportarlo nei ranghi
sia da chi vuole impossessarsi della sua tecnica.

Shi-Woon Yi is a first-year student at
Nine Arts Dragon High School, a victim of constant bullying. When he meets the school's new teacher, Chun-Woo Han, his
life changes as he discovers that Chun-Woo Han is a member of the secret martial arts society called Murim. After much
persistence, Chun-Woo eventually accepts Shi-Woon as his disciple. However, both Chun-Woo and Shi-Woon soon discover
numerous physical complications that makes physical training impossible. It's with the arrival of the new school nurse,
Shi-Ho Lee, that Shi-Woon finds a solution to his condition. Shi-Ho is actually an acquaintance of Chun-Woo and fellow
member of the Murim society who offers Shi-Woon Il-Wol-Shin-Dan pills. With them, Shi-Woon overcomes his handicaps and
realizes his potential. However, he must now dedicate himself to proper training, otherwise he would die from
overexertion – a side effect of the Il-Wol-Shin-Dan.
During his training Shi-Woon unwittingly joins Alex, a
top-class porter and also the new school janitor, and gets involved in a mission to rescue the leader of the
now-splintered but still very powerful Sun-Woo clan, So-Sul. So-Sul has the appearance of a young child even though she
is fifteen years old due to her having an incredibly rare condition known as the Nine Yin Body Type, preventing her from
performing any strenuous activity, including even talking, for a prolongued time. She grows attached to and develops
feelings for Shi-Woon during her stay at Shi-Ho's apartment after witnessing how selfless he is, and that he, unlike
many others who have died around her, would not suffer the same fate leaving her alone again. At the same time Shi-Woon
also has his first encounter with So-Chun Hyuk, the young head of The Heavenly Way School and highly famous Murim-in
said to be a genius amongst geniuses. He intercedes and prevents Shi-Woon from landing with a potentially fatal punch to
Chang-Ho after he and his gang tried assaulting Sae-Hee. Chun-Woo eventually teaches Shi-Woon the Hyun-Chun-Ji-Gong
– a technique revered within the Murim society as the greatest Qìgong technique and the very technique that
Chun-Woo's own master, Un-Wol, died to protect. During their confrontation, So-Chun is amazed at the sheer willpower and
spirit that Shi-Woon shows after being beaten mercilessly to the point where he cannot understand how he is still
standing. Shortly after Chun-Woo appears and they part ways. After a small break at the beach, Chun-Woo's location
becomes known and he, Shi-Ho and So-Sul have to take their leave with Chun-Woo saying that he and Shi-Woon will meet
again.
