A man's wife is under the care of an eccentric and unconventional psychologist who uses innovative and theatrical
techniques to breach the psychological blocks in his patients. When their daughter comes back from a visit with her
mother and is covered with bruises and welts, the father attempts to bar his wife from seeing the daughter but faces
resistance from the secretive psychologist. Meanwhile, the wife's mother and father are attacked by strangely deformed
children, and the man begins to suspect a connection with the psychologist's methods.

L’inizio è dei migliori, nello stile più consono del visionario regista: un palco di teatro, con due
uomini che si parlano con estrema concitazione, entrambe le loro figure si contorcono sottolineando il pathos delle
parole. Uno il padre, l’altro il figlio, in un secco botta e risposta che lascia incollati al video. Inutile dire
che non si capisce minimamente il senso del dialogo, che diverrà chiaro solo in seguito.

Il resto della trama, rigorosamente non lineare, si può riassumere così: un padre, Frank Carveth,
accudisce da solo la figlia Candice perché la moglie Nola è ricoverata in una clinica psichiatrica,
sottoposta alla terapia sperimentale del Dottor Hal Raglan (Oliver Ridd). La bambina và a trovare la madre solo
una volta a settimana, ma quando il padre si accorge di segni di percosse sul suo corpo glielo impedisce. Il dottore
consiglia però di non togliere la piccola alla sua paziente, così Frank lo accusa di frode e si decide a
intentargli una causa, cercando l’appoggio di un ex-paziente ora malato di cancro. È in questa vicenda che
iniziano gli omicidi strazianti nella cittadina, le cui vittime hanno avuto tutte a che fare negativamente con Nola,
sempre rinchiusa nella clinica. Spetterà a Frank, con il decisivo aiuto del Dottor Raglan, risolvere il mistero e
"salvare" la propria bambina..
