A sadly ignored classic that is so different and so much better than the author's other works that one
wonders at its provenance.
The story outlines the contrast between cultured society, in the form of an occupying
German army, and the peasant society of the Italian hilltop village they are occupying, and the lengths to which that
peasant society, bound to traditional and historical poverty, will go to protect their land and property.
In this
case it is a million bottles or wine that must be hidden from the Germans.
The story is stuffed full of vignettes
on traditional lifestyles and, despite what some reviewers have held, believable characters who are often no better than
they should be in the struggle for survival.
In the end one feels a bit sorry for the German detachment caught
between their own Command and the machinations of Bombolini.
Of the thousands of books I have read, this is by far
my favourite.
Whilst the reader has the usual American lack of inflection, he makes a good stab at accent..

PS This is a duplicate of the another torrent I have deleted. One day I'll work out how
to update the tracker listed in the torrent, when Demonoid does a tracker change. Perhaps it makes no difference, but it
just seems that having an outdated tracker in the torrent uploaded to the site means that it is no longer accessed even
