kleine Nachtmusik" - Purcell - Hornpipe / Barbirolli Chamber Orchestra (1928)





Both Handel recordings - together with the Purcell Suite - are among the most satisfying 78 sets I know of. The version
of Handel's Op. 6, No. 6 demonstrates - along with Weingartner's other recordings, notably of Beethoven and Brahms - how
ahead of his time he was in terms of interpretive approach. On the other hand (all historical preoccupations aside),
it's simply a beautiful recording with an amazing sonority - and one of the most listened-to 78 sets I have. Much the
same goes for the suite of instrumental and ballet music from Handel's opera Alcina. 



Barbirolli's magnificent arrangement of Purcell's music (taken mainly from his operas) is unusually effective and ranks
with the best efforts during the 1930s to incorporate music from different sources into new musical contexts (such as
similar projects undertaken by Walton, Francaix and Stokowski among others). The recording itself stems from the time of
Barbirolli's tenure as director of the New York Philharmonic, 1936-43. Recorded in 1928, the extremely fresh reading of
"Eine kleine Nachtmusic" from the then newly-formed Barbirolli Chamber Orchestra - immediately followed by a Purcell
Hornpipe (likely the only recording of the Mozart standard to do so) - may come as a surprise to those who mainly know
Barbirolli's later recordings.



Restorations of 78rpm material recorded 1928, 1938 and 1939 (Columbia and RCA).
