1964 - The Return of Captain America!



1964 saw the debut of Daredevil, the return of Captain America and Stan Lee's continued promotion of the Marvel
Universe.



Both on the covers and in the letters pages and announcements section, Lee would take every opportunity to promote
Marvel's comics as the comics to be excited by and the ones to collect.



Lee's slogans, like "Face Front, True Believer" and "Make Mine Marvel" were repeated by readers in
their letters and in this way reader loyalty grew and saw sales of the titles grow also.



While Super Heroes were now the main selling point there were still a number of romance/humour, western and war titles
offering variety.



Captain America Is Back!



Captain America's entrance into the new Marvel Age of Comics completed the return of the big three Timely Super
Heroes.



After the success of the forties the Super Heroes declined in popularity after the end of the war and there was just a
small return to the news stands in the fifties before the era of the Super Heroes ended until the Fantastic Four
appeared.



Captain America had appeared in late 1963, but the character was an imposter using the name, a ploy to test reader's
reactions to the potential return of the real Cap.



The discovery of Cap frozen in ice by the Avengers ignores the fifties stories, creating a new storyline where Bucky
dies in WWII and Cap is lost, presumed dead.



Later in the year Captain America will be given his own series in Tales of Suspense (059) and this story will also be
the first appearance of Jarvis, the long-time butler for the Avengers.



The Man Without Fear



Matt Murdock is blinded as a child and after years of training appears to the world as Daredevil, a character
epitomising the new Marvel style of great power and equally great weakness.



The first issue is drawn by long-time Sub-Mariner artist Bill Everett, but subsequent issues would be drawn by the
acclaimed artist Wally Wood.



The first issue also introduces the main two characters in Murdock's private life - Foggy Nelson, Murdock's college
roommate, and Karen Page, his long-time love.



Daredevil's first costume is yellow and red, the all-red costume was to follow later.



The Black Widow



Natasha Romanova first appears in 1964, the first character to be called the Black Widow.



Her first appearances are in street clothes, the all-black figure hugging costume would follow later.



The Black Widow first goes up against Iron Man, but later she will have romantic involvement with both Hawkeye and
Daredevil.



The Enchantress



The Enchantress is the Norse version of the Roman Goddess of love, Venus. She appears for the first time, along with the
Executioner, in Journey into Mystery 103.



Her greatest desire is to marry Thor and rule Asgard.



Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver



Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, aka Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, appear for the first time in X-Men 004, as part of
Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.



But as time moves on it becomes clear that rather than villains they are really heroes.



Eventually they join the Avengers and later will discover that Magneto is their father.



Wanda's power develops to such an effect that she is responsible for the creation of the House of M and the
near-destruction of the Marvel Universe.



Electro



Electro, another classic Spider-Man villain makes his debut in Amazing Spider-Man 009.



The Mandarin



Another classic villain, in the mold of the Yellow Claw, is the Mandarin. He first appears in Tales of Suspense 050 and
is as powerful and intelligent as Iron Man.



Using ten rings he has access to enormous power. Later stories would reveal the origins of the extraterrestrial
rings.



Also Appearing for the First Time



The Blob - a mutant who could not be moved.

Baron Von Strucker - one of Sgt Fury's greatest foes, even returning in the sixties as the head of Hydra fighting
SHIELD.

The Enforcers - thugs who later went on to work for the Green Goblin.

About the Complete Marvel Chronology



The Complete Marvel Chronology (CMC) is version 2.0 of the Marvel Chronology (MC).



The MC was created by cyager69 aka Chuck, who uploaded Marvel comics beginning
with Fantastic Four 001 (Nov 61) through to the issues published in Jun 1997.



When Chuck was unable to continue the uploads I took over the MC and uploaded
the remainder of the issues through to December 2008. Additional uploads added various titles not cover-dated with a
specific month (the 'Decades' uploads) and seven Fill packs added new scans for issues missing when the original uploads
were done for the 70's through to the 90's.



With none of Chuck's original uploads online, the decision was to either upload the original version of 1961-1996 or go
with a brand new, full version incorporating the missing genres, such as romance, western and humour, and including the
imprints which Chuck intended to upload following the completion of the MC.



The CMC will cover Marvel's entire seventy year history. At present I am
uploading the years beginning with 1960 and these uploads will continue right through to December 1996. After that I
have not finalised what will follow, but the likelihood will be that I go back to upload the 39-59 period, and then
upload the 97-09 period again. When I do upload version 2.0 of 97-09 there will be many additions and many new scans.



News and Notes



The sixties roll on with the first of two uploads covering the year 1964. The first covers January to June and also the
titles with no cover date.



Part two, covering July to December will follow on Sunday.



The copy of Tales of Suspense 041 (196305) is faulty with two pages missing and two pages duplicated (the missing pages
are the first two pages of the second story). Thanks to Erwin who reported that one.



The version which was originally used in the Chronology will be used to replace it.



Which brings me on to the Sixties Fill Pack. This will appear after the 1969 upload and will feature any issues which
are faulty, issues which have been scanned where the issue was missing when the torrent was originally uploaded and any
issues where a c2c replacement has been found for a non-c2c version.



To date there are three issues which have been scanned since the sixties uploads began, the faulty issue of Tales of
Suspense 041 and a c2c copy of Strange Tales 103.
