 Complete Marvel Chronology 1966 00-06 



 1966 - Marvel Hits The Big-Time 



The phenomenon that was Marvel Comics became a part of the other media in 1966, as many news outlets sought interviews
with Stan Lee or Jack Kirby.



And many celebrities would also reveal themselves to be big fans of the new Super Heroes.



1966 also saw the arrival of some new names to the Marvel Bullpen with Roy Thomas and Denny O'Neill taking some of the
writing workload off Stan Lee, and John Romita and Werner Roth contributing to the artistic output.



This year also saw Steve Ditko leave Marvel, a move that to this day has never really been explained.



The all-white face of Marvel would change this year with the introduction of Wyatt Wingfoot, a native American, and
T'Challa, the Black Panther, the first black Super Hero.



This year would also see the introduction of both Galactus and Mary-Jane Watson.



Face it, Tigers, this is one heck of a Marvel year!



 The Galactus Trilogy 



If the Fantastic Four hadn't been cosmic before they certainly were beginning with issue 048.



Stan Lee went for broke and, in collaboration with Jack Kirby, dreamt up the most cosmic Super-Villain of all -
Galactus.



With the aim of devouring all of Earth's energy, Galactus instantly became the most deadly opposition they had faced.



And at the same time, comics storytelling was changed forever.



 The Silver Surfer 



As well as Galactus, Fantastic Four issue 048 also sees the debut the the Silver Surfer - Galactus' herald, a being
responsible for finding the energy Galactus desperately needs.



The Surfer reveals his cosmic indifference to life when he meets humanity but he soon sees the error of his thinking and
turns on his master helping the FF defeat Galactus.



His release from Galactus means he pays a price - he is imprisoned on Earth, unable to roam the stars.



 Maximus 



The introduction of the Inhumans in 1965 is followed in issue 047 of Fantastic Four by the arrival of Maximus, brother
of the Inhumans leader, Black Bolt.



Driven insane by exposure to Black Bolt's sonic scream, Maximus has no qualms at devising all manner of plans to take
Black Bolt's throne from him.



 Pluto 



Pluto is the Olympian god of the Netherworld.



In his introduction in Thor 127, he tricks Hercules into signing a contract that would condemn him to the Netherworld
for all time.



 Sharon Carter 



Sharon Carter, also known as Agent 13, is an agent of SHIELD.



She assists Captain America in much undercover work but also falls in love with him.



 Revealed - The Origin of Nick Fury's Eye Patch 



Issue 027 of Sgt Fury sees the story which explains how Fury came to wear the eye patch so familiar to readers of his
sixties SHIELD adventures.



 Also Making Their Debut 



Wyatt Wingfoot - introduced in Fantastic Four 051, he soon becomes a best friend and college roommate to Johnny Storm.
He will join the FF on many occasions.



The Plunderer - brother of Kevin 'Ka-Zar' Plunder, he creates a weapon made of vibranium, a metal which emits powerful
vibrations, strong enough to destroy other metals. (Daredevil 012)



Batroc the Leaper - a French version of Captain America, adept in the skills of Savate (French kickboxing) (Tales of
Suspense 075)



 Notable Events 



Journey into Mystery becomes The Mighty Thor beginning with issue 126.



In Daredevil 016 John Romita gets to draw Spider-Man for the first, but not last, time.



Fantasy Masterpieces 003 begins reprints of stories from before Fantastic Four 001, bringing the Golden Age of Comics to
new readers.



Rick Jones, believing that the Hulk had died, reveals to the world that Bruce Banner was the Hulk.



The story of how Professor Xavier lost the use of his legs is revealed in X-Men 020.

About the Complete Marvel Chronology



The Complete Marvel Chronology (CMC) is version 2.0 of the Marvel Chronology (MC).



The MC was created by cyager69 aka Chuck, who uploaded Marvel comics beginning
with Fantastic Four 001 (Nov 61) through to the issues published in Jun 1997.



When Chuck was unable to continue the uploads I took over the MC and uploaded
the remainder of the issues through to December 2008. Additional uploads added various titles not cover-dated with a
specific month (the 'Decades' uploads) and seven Fill packs added new scans for issues missing when the original uploads
were done for the 70's through to the 90's.



With none of Chuck's original uploads online, the decision was to either upload the original version of 1961-1996 or go
with a brand new, full version incorporating the missing genres, such as romance, western and humour, and including the
imprints which Chuck intended to upload following the completion of the MC.



The CMC will cover Marvel's entire seventy year history. At present I am
uploading the years beginning with 1960 and these uploads will continue right through to December 1996. After that I
have not finalised what will follow, but the likelihood will be that I go back to upload the 39-59 period, and then
upload the 97-09 period again. When I do upload version 2.0 of 97-09 there will be many additions and many new scans.



News and Notes



Welcome to the first of two uploads covering the Marvel Comics of 1966. Part 2, covering July to December, will follow
on Tuesday.



The upload for 1965 featured the Membership Kit for the Merry Marvel Marching Society, and this upload adds a lot more
files which are listed in the 00 section, titles with no monthly publication date.



Downloaders of the Decades uploads in the MC will already be familiar with this
system, but for anyone new to the MC and CMC, the 00 section is a place to put all the various comics, books, magazines and other materials not
published by Marvel but featuring the Marvel characters,published over the years and which, if bought, would be a very
collectible collection.



This month sees the mini-books, one of the Lancer paperbacks for which Marvel issued a licence, and the Marvel stamp
books.



Look forward to plenty more of this type of publication, many which are new to the Chronology. All the previous Decades
uploads will also be included.
